Most high school reform efforts understandably focus on boosting the success of low-income students who are underachieving academically, but in every school district where students struggle, there are academically capable low-income and minority students who do graduate prepared for college. Yet each year, many of these students choose to attend nonselective four-year colleges where graduation rates are distressingly low. Others enroll at two-year colleges, where degree completion and transfer rates are even lower. Many more do not attend college at all.
In 2010, MDRC and its partners pilot-tested an innovative advising program, College Match, in three Chicago public high schools. This practitioner brief presents practical lessons from that program. It offers five strategies that show promise, that could be widely applicable, that counselors and advisers can integrate into their existing college guidance activities, and that can be implemented in college advising settings in and out of schools.

Childhood instability refers to sudden and involuntary disruptions in a child's life that cause a negative change. Instability can manifest in many overlapping ways. For instance, a child may experience instability from a job loss in the family as well as the subsequent financial hardships that it brings.
Young brains are like sponges: they absorb an incredible amount from their environment. The technical term is "neural plasticity," and while some level of plasticity exists in adulthood, early childhood is when the brain is most malleable.
The presence of negative stimuli in a child's environment -- such as poverty, emotional or physical abuse, and violence -- can be damaging to a child's long-term development.

Principals are key to improving teaching and learning in schools, but how can school district central offices give principals the support they need? Three tools designed by education researchers at the University of Washington are meant to help. Two focus on the redesign of central offices in ways that foster effective leadership in schools. The last is an aid for principal supervisors seeking to develop the instructional capabilities of the principals they oversee.
