In January 2022, Dr. Cynthia Chavez Lamar (San Felipe Pueblo, Hopi, Tewa and Navajo) was was announced as the third director of the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI). Chavez Lamar is also the first Indigenous woman to lead a Smithsonian museum. She will oversee the Cultural Resources Center in Suitland, Maryland, the museum on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. and the George Gustav Heye Center in New York City.
