Eddie Benton-Banai, leader in American Indian Movement, dies at 89
Eddie Benton-Banai, who helped found the American Indian Movement partly in response to alleged police brutality against Indigenous people, died Nov. 30 at a care center in Hayward, Wis. He was 89.
Family friend Dorene Day confirmed the death but did not provide a cause.
Mr. Benton-Banai, who is Anishinaabe Ojibwe, was born on the Lac Courte Oreilles reservation in northern Wisconsin. He was the grand chief, or spiritual leader, of the Three Fires Midewiwin Lodge.
