The Nimiipu (Nez Perce) “Thief Treaty”
The illegal treaty with the Nimiipu (Nez Perce) ceded six million acres of Nez Perce lands. Chief Joseph, who up until that time was Christianized and friendly with American settlers, turned away from Christianity and returned to his traditional ways and practices (Nies, 1996).
