English traders enslave Indians through fiscal debt
During the period known as the “Tuscarora wars,” the Tuscarora resist English slave traders, who use fiscal debt as a means of enslaving them. English traders sell goods on credit in the fall, expecting full payment post spring hunting season. If the debt cannot be paid, traders seize the man’s wife and/or children and sell them into slavery in the West Indies (Nies, 1996).
