Dine’ traditional activists win suit against multinational energy company and owner of Peabody Coal Company
The Dine’ Alliance, a group of 500 Dine’ traditionalists from Black Mesa, petitions the government to deny the company a permanent operating permit and to insure that their mine meets proper permit and cleanup requirements in their territory, noting that the contamination from previous mines had contaminated groundwater, killed their sheep, destroyed burial sites, and destroyed the Dine’ people’s health (Nies, 1996).
