Congress ends treaty-making with tribes; creates system of coerced dependency

Tribes in the U.S. are no longer recognized as independent nations by the federal government, according to the Indian Appropriation Act of March 3, 1871. Moreover, Congress directs that all Indians are to be treated as individuals and legally designated “wards” of the federal government (Nies, 1996).
