Cherokee Treaty of New Echota
John Ridge, a Cherokee leader representing only a handful of Cherokees, negotiates a treaty selling off Cherokee lands for $5 million and agreeing to move to Indian Territory. The Cherokee national council rejects the treaty and says it is invalid, but the U.S. Senate ratifies it. In retaliation, Ridge is assassinated by Cherokee tribesmen (Nies, 1996).
