Bounties for scalps
The Adjutant General of Minnesota, Oscar Malmros, issues an order for the establishment of volunteer scouts to patrol southern Minnesota to kill “hostile” Indians. Volunteers are offered rewards ranging from $25 to $200 for Dakota scalps. Period newspapers describe the taking of many scalps. (http://www.usdakotawar.org/history/aftermath/bounties)
