In line with U.S. policy, the U.S. General Agent for Education, who is also the head of the Presbyterian Mission in Alaska, Dr. Sheldon Jackson, creates a plan to divide Alaska geographically among different religious denominations for mission work and to establish corresponding industrial schools for Alaska Natives. The explicit goal is to colonize and eradicate Alaska Native identity and culture through religion and education (Native Voices, “1885: Alaska regions assigned to religious denominations”).
