Organic Act of 1884 supports “educating” Alaska Native children as part of U.S. assimilation policy

The U.S. supports government teachers, in collaboration with U.S. missionaries, to Christianize and use education as a tool to supplant Alaska Native worldviews and replace them with a Christianized, Westernized worldview and values. William T. Harris, head of the Bureau of Education, states: “We have no higher calling than to be missionaries of our idea to those people who have not yet reached the Anglo-Saxon frame of mind.” (http://www.alaskool.org/resources/anc/anc01.htm).
